FMC Environmental Solutions - Wastewater Treatment
Wastewater Treatment

Drinking water, wastewater and process water each have "clean water" issues based on the function of the water. Drinking water must meet various federal and state standards for consumption, while wastewater and process waters effluent are regulated by National Pollution Discharge Elimination Standards (NPDES).

Because drinking water must be safe for consumption and esthetically pleasing, it must not have any appreciable color that may be imparted by metallic ion such as iron or manganese, and it should not have an "earthy," "musty" or "moldy" odor which is typically associated with geosmin or mib.

Wastewater and process water are regulated by the same standards that limit the amount of metals (iron, copper, zinc, etc.), color, sulfate, chloride, turbidity, BOD/COD, cyanide, arsenic, inorganic and organic materials. In addition to the regulatory issues that concern wastewater and process water operations, economic concerns can dominate treatment. For example heat transfer loss as a result of bio fouling is a reason for treating these waters.
